Is Podcasting Really Saturated? Here’s What You Need to Know

I hear this question all the time: “Isn’t podcasting oversaturated now?” Usually from experts and business owners who’ve been sitting on the fence about starting their own show. They’re worried they’ve missed the boat, that there’s no room for new voices.

Let me tell you what I tell them: worrying about podcast saturation is like worrying there are too many books in the world. Sure, there are millions of books out there, but does that stop us from seeking out the ones that speak directly to our interests and challenges?

Of course not.

Let’s dig into what’s really happening in the podcast space and why it matters for your business. Because while everyone’s fretting about saturation, they’re missing the real opportunity that’s sitting right in front of them.

Here’s the thing: yes, there are over 5 million podcasts out there. Sounds overwhelming, doesn’t it? But dig a little deeper and you’ll find that under 20% of those are actively producing new episodes. And of those active shows, how many are sharing genuine expertise in your specific field? How many are creating valuable, actionable content for your particular audience?

This isn’t just about adding another podcast to the mix. It’s about creating a content engine that drives your entire business forward. It is about developing and growing your network through inviting key guests and so much more.

When you approach podcasting strategically, it becomes so much more than just another show competing for attention.

The Oversaturation Myth

Yes, certain corners of the podcasting world are pretty crowded. True crime? Packed. Celebrity chat shows? Overflowing. Generic, vaguely inspirational business advice? You’ll find thousands of those.

And let’s talk about the celebrity factor. It seems like every actor, musician and reality TV star has launched a podcast, bringing their ready-made audience with them. Good for them – but that’s not what we’re talking about here.

I’ll be honest – even I sometimes feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of shows available. Decision fatigue is real, and many listeners stick to their familiar favourites rather than exploring new shows, but when I find one I like that speaks to me, it goes on the list and I actively look forward to new episodes.

But Here’s What Everyone’s Missing

While everyone’s fighting for space in overcrowded genres, there are countless untapped niches just waiting for the right expert to come along. This is where it gets interesting.

Think about your specific expertise. Your unique perspective. Your particular slice of the business world. That’s where the real opportunity lies.

What makes podcasting different from other content platforms is its ability to go deep. We’re not talking about 60-second reels or quick-tip posts. This is about having real, meaningful conversations that:

  • Showcase your expertise
  • Serve your specific audience
  • Build genuine authority
  • Create valuable connections

Why This Matters for You

The podcast audience is still growing. More importantly, they’re getting smarter about what they listen to. They’re not just looking for entertainment – they want:

  • Real expertise
  • Practical insights
  • Genuine conversations
  • Specific solutions

And here’s the brilliant bit – podcasting gives you the space to provide all of that. No time constraints, no algorithm to please, just valuable content for the people who need to hear it.

The Bottom Line

Is podcasting saturated?

This is the wrong question.

The right question is: “Is there space for authentic expertise in my niche?”

The answer? Absolutely. But only if you’re ready to:

  • Share real insights
  • Focus on your specific audience
  • Bring genuine value
  • Think beyond just podcasting
